In “The American Laundry News” podcast, a specialty show for professionals in the laundry and linen services industry, Steve Alvarado talks about what OSHA is looking for in terms of laundry safety and how laundries can be proactive about being “OSHA safe.”
Steve, who serves several clients in the laundry industry, gave a brief overview of the history of OSHA, including California’s notoriously strict policies, and talked about employee-reported incidents and complaints, targeted inspections, and citations.
He also discussed industry-specific information in the 20-minute interview, including one of the most common mistakes made by laundry industry professionals.
“The big thing to pay attention to is lockout/tagout, which are the procedures you need to have for each individual machine,” said Steve. “You’re supposed to have a specific plan for each specific machine, and that’s where a lot of people go wrong. You’re also supposed to annually train on it and do a periodic inspection—I like to see the actual procedure for locking and tagging labeled on the machine itself.”
