Nick Hulse and Kevin Troutman co-authored an article in Medical Journal – Houston in response to a recent release issued by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) urging healthcare facilities to “employ effective safety and health programs to protect those who protect us.” According to the release, U.S. healthcare workers experienced a 249 percent increase in injury and illness rates in 2020.
In the article they advise healthcare employers to repurpose their COVID-19 prevention plans, to continue to conduct periodic hazard assessments, and to implement a comprehensive injury and illness prevention program.
“Healthcare workers are rightfully lauded for their heroism throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” they wrote. “There is no better way to thank these workers for their work than to ensure that they remain safe from workplace hazards."
