The California Workplace Safety Summit presented by Fisher Phillips is designed for safety and human resources professionals and attorneys. Our Cal/OSHA attorneys and guest speakers will provide an in-depth analysis of the latest California workplace safety legislation and rulemaking, offer compliance tips, review Cal/OSHA enforcement trends, and provide guidance on how to navigate Cal/OSHA investigations.

8:30 – 9:00 a.m.: Registration
9:00 – 10:00 a.m.: Cal/OSHA Enforcement Trends – Steve Alvarado and Andrew Sommer
This session will cover the latest Cal/OSHA enforcement developments, including DOSH inspection priorities and enforcement statistics, and the impact of SB 606 empowering DOSH to issue enterprise-wide citations and per instance penalties.
10:00 – 10:50 a.m.: Workplace Violence Prevention Law (SB 553) – Hannah Sweiss, Andrew Sommer and Sophia Botti
California passed SB 553 requiring virtually all California employers to create and implement a Workplace Violence Prevention (WVP) Plan by July 1, 2024. This session will offer tips for developing and implementing a WVP Plan, conducting a security assessment, and training, and avoiding common pitfalls in preparing for the compliance deadline.

11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.: Regulatory Update on Recent Cal/OSHA Rulemaking: Proposed Indoor Heat Illness and Lead Standard Amendment, and Permanent Infectious Disease Standard on the Horizon – Rob Moutrie, Sr. Policy Advocate, California Chamber of Commerce, and Bruce Wick, Director of Risk Management, Housing Contractors of California, moderated by Andrew Sommer.
This session will discuss the latest proposed Cal/OSHA standards, including the pending Indoor Heat Illness Rule (slated to take effect July 2024), amendments to the Lead Standard (anticipated effective date of July 2024), and the Permanent Infectious Disease Standard (likely to be taken up in an Advisory Committee this year). We will hear from guest speakers on their perspective on the rulemaking process and how these rules are expected to impact employers.
12:15 – 12:45 p.m.: Lunchtime Chat with Fisher Phillips’ Legislative Advocate Ben Ebbink
During lunch, Ben Ebbink, the Co-Chair of Fisher Phillips’ Government Relations Practice Group, will offer insights into the state of affairs in Sacramento, particularly recently passed and pending workplace safety legislation.
12:45 – 1:00 p.m.: Open Forum for Questions
1:00 – 2:00 p.m.: When Cal/OSHA Comes Knocking at the Door: Tips for Navigating a Cal/OSHA Investigation – Warren Nelson and Steve Alvarado, moderated by Hannah Sweiss
This session walks through the Cal/OSHA inspection process and practical tips for employers in managing an inspection and interfacing with the enforcement agency. It will include case studies to test participants' knowledge of the inspection process.
